Is WriteChinese free?
Yes. The core practice engine, per-stroke grading, and HSK 1-3 word lists are completely free. No trial period, no credit card required. Future premium features may arrive, but the core will stay free.
Do I need to install an app?
No. WriteChinese runs in your browser. It works on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Just open a character page and start writing with your mouse, trackpad, touchscreen, or stylus.
Simplified or traditional characters?
WriteChinese currently teaches Simplified Chinese, which is the standard used in mainland China and most HSK exams. Traditional character support is on the roadmap for a later release.
Do I even need to learn to write by hand?
If you are preparing for HSK, living in a Chinese-speaking country, or want to remember characters longer, writing by hand builds muscle memory that typing cannot. Studies show that handwriting improves character retention significantly compared to typing alone.
What is HSK?
HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the standard Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers. It has six levels, with HSK 1 covering about 300 characters. WriteChinese starts at HSK 1 and will grow to cover HSK 1-3.
